One of the most important achievements of modern endocrinology is the emergence of several new groups of hypoglycemic drugs for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These include glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. The first two of them were studied in a series of large randomized clinical trials and demonstrated a positive effect on cardiovascular and overall mortality, the risk of renal complications and a number of other conditions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In particular, GLP-1 agonists act similarly to the hormones GIP and GLP-1, which are produced in the gastrointestinal tract after meals. They enhance postprandial insulin release, reduce appetite, and decrease insulin resistance, thereby reducing blood glucose levels and body weight.
