PECULIARITIES OF PERIODONTITIS IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES

Periodontitis, a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissues and bone-supporting teeth, presents
unique challenges in patients with diabetes. This article explores the complex relationship between diabetes and
periodontitis and highlights how hyperglycemia can exacerbate periodontal disease. Patients with diabetes often have more severe and rapidly developing periodontitis due to weakened immunity, poor wound healing and increased inflammation. The article also explores the dual effects in which periodontitis can worsen glycemic control, complicating diabetes management. Key factors such as altered oral microbiota, elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and vascular changes are being investigated to understand their role in this relationship. Clinical implications, including the need for intensive periodontal care, and potential therapeutic strategies to mitigate these complications are discussed. This comprehensive review highlights the importance of integrated medical and dental care in improving the outcomes of diabetic patients with periodontitis.
